Winter Activities Popular at Eddy Senior Living

Winters in the Albany Capital Region can be challenging for people of all ages, but they are particularly difficult for seniors. Below freezing temperatures compounded by snow and ice accumulations make it unsafe to drive or even walk outside, not to mention the hazards of snow removal. Family members and caregivers, too, are limited by weather conditions. They may not be able to visit as often, leaving many seniors feeling isolated and even depressed.

At Eddy Senior Living, we keep seniors active and engaged by hosting a variety of events and activities, and provide snow removal and transportation services to keep everyone safe.

Winter Things to Do for Seniors

Whether you live in our independent senior living communities, our assisted living communities or our memory care communities, there’s plenty to do all winter long at Eddy Senior Living. Here are just a few of the activities we have planned during the winter months.

Fun & Games

Snowball fightIn addition to bingo nights, weekly card games and game groups, several of our communities organize special events during the winter.

The Beverwyck senior living community in Slingerlands NY recently hosted a scavenger hunt for residents, as well as a pool party. And thanks to a plentiful snowfall, seniors in our enriched housing and assisted living community at Beverwyck even took part in a good old-fashioned snowball fight.

At the Eddy Hawthorne Ridge senior living community in East Greenbush NY, this winter’s highlight was a “Puppy Bowl”, modeled after Animal Planet’s pre-game show that airs during the Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, residents at the Majorie Doyle Rockwell Center for Memory Care in Cohoes NY enjoyed a special winter edition of their popular “Out of the Hat” game, which uses cards pulled from a theme appropriate hat – in this case, a ski hat – to challenge residents with winter-themed charades, name that tune, trivia questions, and more.

Learning & Enrichment

All of the Eddy Senior Living Communities support lifelong learning and regularly offer opportunities for enrichment through visiting speakers, educational classes and demonstrations.
Residents at the Glen Eddy senior living community in Niskayuna NY can even choose from a handful of Union College Academy of Lifelong Learning (UCALL) programs, including The Art of Literary Translation and The Evolving State of the Artic Region. All programs are held on the Glen Eddy campus and are presented by Union College faculty, community leaders and experts.

Painting a winter sceneArts & Crafts

There are painting and drawing classes, knitting and coloring groups, and plenty of opportunities for residents to get in touch with their creative side. The Terrace at Glen Eddy, our assisted living and enriched housing community in Niskayuna NY, even hosted a Paint & Sip Class this winter.

Outings

Whether it’s a trip to the supermarket, a local restaurant or an overnight excursion to nearby attractions, Eddy Senior Living routinely offers residents the chance to get out and explore.
Even our memory care communities plan special outings. This winter, seniors at the Majorie Doyle Rockwell Center for Memory Care in Cohoes NY were treated to an elaborate Holiday Lights display on the property of Quick Response Restoration in Clifton Park.

Wellness Programs

All of the Eddy Senior Living communities promote physical activity and whole body wellness through their EmpowerU wellness program.

Programs and services include a fully-equipped fitness center on each of our campuses, as well as regularly scheduled exercise classes tailored specifically for seniors. Residents can choose from balance, strength training, yoga, line dancing, Zumba Gold and more.

Both Glen Eddy and Beverwyck also offer water aerobics in their heated indoor pools.

Keeping Seniors Active & Healthy in Winter

In addition to the many scheduled activities, learning and enrichment programs, cultural events and wellness classes, Eddy Senior Living provides completely maintenance-free living, dining options, transportation services and extra assistance when needed to allow seniors to live comfortably and stay healthy during the winter and all year long.
